The Four 'C's of Diamond

There are many players in the diamond industry. As a whole, there are 2 distinct groups in this industry – up market versus mass market.

So how do we distinguish them?

As a rule of thumb, diamonds are graded by 4 Cs namely : Cut, Carat Weight, Color and Clarity. No one factor is more important than other. These factors work hand in hand in order to bring that beautiful piece of diamond to you.

CUT

Diamond rough can be cut into many shapes, depending on the way their rough are found and the position of their inclusions. The most popular cut in market is the round brilliant cut. Any cuts other than round brilliant would be fancy cuts (e.g. Marquise, Princess, Pear, Oval, Heart, and Emerald)

CARAT WEIGHT

The SI Unit (units of measure in the International System) for diamond is metric carats (ct). One carat is one-fifth (0.20) gram. One carat is den divided into 100 points. For example, if the diamond weights 1.15ct, it simply means the diamond weights 1 carat and 15 points. As a general rule, the bigger the diamond, the more expansive. As large diamonds is more rare than small ones.

COLOR

A general misconception is that all diamonds are colorless. However, truly colorless diamonds are rather rare. The diamonds that set in jewelleries are mostly near colorless with a touch of yellow or brown. Diamonds come in many other colors like red, purple and green. The brighter and pure the color is for diamond, the higher the value.

CLARITY

It is always one’s aim to hold absolute perfect goods. But in reality, the supplies for absolute flawless goods are very low. Diamonds have internal features as well – clarity characteristics. Clarity is the term used to define clarity. They have an inverse relationship - the higher the clarity, the fewer inclusions.
